Hello, loyal flist. Please read the quoted post below, if you are so minded, and then if you think you may be interested in this or have ideas for other things, please pop over to [livejournal.com profile] domorethings and note your interest or idea there. Or do it here, as Emmie (she who is organising this) reads this LJ also.

"This one is for fans of the brilliant Terry Pratchett, who was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers this year.

You may already have heard of the fan scheme, Match It For Pratchett , which aims to match Terry's donation of £500,000 ($1,000 000) to the UK Alzheimer's Research Trust.

I've been thinking about doing something suitably silly to raise money, something in the spirit of the man and his works.

Would any of you be interested in a sponsored Witches vs Wizards (or other assorted Discworld characters) read-athon in Leicester Square¹, with tea, and maybe cake?

The idea being, we'd all dress up as Discworld characters, pick a Pratchett book, and read the whole thing sat in Leicester Square. We could collect sponsorship beforehand, and perhaps have collection buckets on the day too. I'm thinking late spring/early summer.

I'm trying to gauge interest, and if enough people seem up for it, I'll set the official ball rolling down the hill of fund-raising...

[1] or some other suitably public space"

Word spread. We now return you to your usual programming.

I would love to do this... But I am an American and thus reaching Leicester Square would cost more money than I could raise for Terry "The Man" Pratchett.

I totally would, if I lived on that side of the ocean. :( Keep me updated when the dates get set, though. Mu mom and dad are taking a trip to Paris and London this summer, and part of the trip is that my mom has a bunch of Pratchett fans she's been talking to online, and they're all going to meet up and stuff. So if it happens to coincide with the trip, I bet they'd go!

The date is not set yet, but perhaps it can be coordinated around their visit?

I can certainly find out their dates for you today. I think my mom would love that. She's devastated about his diagnoses, so doing something that would feel like helping will hopefully cheer her up. I'm kinda still weirded out about the part where my mom, who doesn't like the internet, has apparently been talking to people online enough that they're going to visit them and stuff. What the hell, mom?

Poke people! Do things!

Or just give the Cause $1...

Actually, so many of the people I know who would do this are over there in your end of the world.

That would be great, the more the better, and since they're already Pratchett fans... Do you know how many are planning to be at the get-together?

No, but I can ask that too.

Yeah, I know full well most of you lot would. Maybe there should be some kind of internet-a-thon thing that we could all do.

Don't ask me, I am new born foal wobbly today. I make even less sense than usual.

Ok, so my parents will be in London from 7/13-7/19, when they leave for Paris. The group they're getting together with is called the Broken Drummers group, and they're having a meetup on 7/14, but mom doesn't know how many are going. She says they'll definitely be interested, and will forward any of the info along to the group. The only thing is they're apparently doing some guided tours while they're there, and she didn't tell me what days those were. So! That's all I have right now. :)
