Option A: We all die. Get drunk on Thursday night. ([livejournal.com profile] sassette726, stop fretting)

Option B: We get sucked into a black hole and emerge in a parallel universe that looks just like this one. Of course, this could have happened when they switched it on to test it at the start of June JULY I AM AN IDIOT. Possibly end of June.

Option C: Erm...nothing? Life continues as ever, science geeks get very excitable.

Which do you think it will be? Place your bets...

[Poll #1235499]

My own personal Something Else involves anarchy caused by people thinking we're all dead, and the Borg and Clone army taking over. BE READY.

Edit: Oh GOD. I have just realised that if Option A is right, then my Earth Advisory Board status marker should turn to red but there may not be time! This would be unfair.

Son of Edit: Option B is VERY UPSET.

I know one of the companies involved and during our black building they managed to blow up our LV system.

I fear this

It'd be hard to beat the metric/imperial screw-up that Lockheed Martin did in the Mars Climate Orbiter disaster.

This has not helped my paranoia one tiny bit.

Definitely B, as things have been a bit odd since June. A bit, not a lot. Also, there's been a blimp flying over London.

B would rule.

You beat me to it.

And in July they only switched it on at less than 10% full power.

Enough for a black hole, though. Who knows what will happen?

I think C, really. But B would be amusing.

The Earth gets hit by waves just as potent as the ones created and we are all still alive and well. If a black hole/fire/blah was to be caused by the process they can fill up the tunnels with foam in 15 minutes. It'll take them quite a few rotations to get the molecules to the speed they desire during which it can be shut down.

Oh, I know. But we should get drunk Thursday night just in case, y/y? I have warned my boss already, the whole office is planning to party like there may possibly be no tomorrow. :-D

I vote for A, just as an excuse to get drunk on Thursday ;)

There have been serious studies into the impact of the LHC thank you very much and I remain calm and collected. Apart from Shrieking PENTAQAURK in my head quite often, or the sincere delight I experience at the thought of a Higgs Boson ...or possibly the Island of Stability theory getting more impetus.....or even just the strange and bizarre things that could occur....

Hmmmmm, Sleptons.

I think that falls under "science geeks get very excitable". :-)

The Large Hadron Collider gets switched on in the v early hours of Friday morning. This is under Switzerland, and will either make science geeks very excited as it unlocks the mysteries of the universe, or create a black hole and suck the planet into it.

I love science. Mysteries solved, or DEAD. No messing around. :-D

But think what will happen if they don't find that boson. People will have to go back to formula...again!

If I could contribute to LHC@home I would have, but they based the software on an icky platformist compiler that dislikes Steve Jobs.

Instead I crunch for Einstein@home. So maybe at the same time we'll find the Higgs Boson and gravitational waves.

Option D - George Monbiot will write a hysterical article in The Guardian about the potential environmental aspect of the LHC, and many tree-huggers will surround it to protest.
