We went to see Control tonight.

Oh my god. I am in awe.

I freely admit that I was a Corbijn fan before I saw the film, but I am still in awe. So damned good, just amazing. And the performances were perfect. Oh my god. Awe.

Hmm. See, having read that review, I still think Corbijn did the best possible work there could be without turning it into a documentary. Debbie Curtis was heavily involved, ditto other people who were there at the time, as Corbijn was. You could do a detailed study on his mental health problems, but it would take 4 times as long. I think he conveyed them very powerfully without going into detail.

It's interesting that she says it's a different story to the one she knows, when it's closely taken from the one her mother wrote.

Yeah, how is it different when she was 1 when he died, so most of her knowledge would come from her mother, who co-produced the movie! My guess is it's different because it had the input from Annik and various other people as well, which actually makes it a more balanced film in my opinion.

And where does she get the thing from that his depression and mood swings weren't addressed? Did she actually want someone to stand there and say 'Oh, he suffers from depression and mood swings' when it was perfectly obvious to me and I'm sure everyone else watching it? There's only so much you can put in a movie about someone's life, even a life as short as Ian's.

The thing about her review that made me laugh though was the bit where she asks where depressing 70's Manchester was. It's gone love, that's why it was filmed in Macclesfield and Nottingham, it was the closest they could get. What Anton being Dutch has to do with that I don't know, he was perfectly aware what Manchester was like in those days, he even lived on the streets for a while!

Also, the bit about being suspicious as what does a Dutchman know about all of this? Seeing as HER MOTHER was involved in persuading him to make the film as nobody else could do it justice, I think the answer is "lots".

Very little is going to beat the clarity and power of the representation of his mood swings than the sudden "sex to crying like baby" scene.

Ah well, you can't blame her for feeling weird, after all she never knew the guy, so it must be the most bizarre feeling to watch it.
